PHYSICAL EDUCATION AT GUESTLING

At Guestling Bradshaw CE  Primary School we aim to engage and include all children in fun and highly active PE sessions to develop an enjoyment and love for sport, whilst also encouraging a healthy lifestyle that they will carry with them through their lives. We include regular opportunities for all children to be involved in competitive team and individual sport against their peers and participating in intra-school and inter-school competitions. 

Pupils are taught key skills in Dance, Gymnastics, Swimming, Outdoor Sports and Team Games. 

We have received the School Games Gold mark for the last 5 years.

Intent

At Guestling Bradshaw CE Primary School, we use the Jasmine Real PE Scheme of Work to support our broader PE curriculum. Real PE is a unique, holistic approach to teaching and learning. It provides fun and simple Schemes of Work and support for primary school teachers that gives them the confidence and skills to deliver quality Physical Education. Fully aligned to the National Curriculum and Ofsted requirements, Real PE focuses on the development of agility, balance, coordination, creativity, healthy competition and cooperative learning. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being for all pupils. Our children learn about the importance of physical activity, develop positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle.

Our  P.E. Curriculum is clearly mapped out to support teachers in ensuring that key knowledge and skills are well sequenced and are built upon year on year:

  • We have a broad and knowledge-rich PE curriculum that develops the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities.
  • We use qualtiy  resources which ensure challenge and support non-specialist teachers to deliver a quality P.E curriculum.
  • Every child engages in competitive sport, every school year through planned school and intra-school competitions.

  • All pupils have swimming lessons every year and pupils who are not proficient swimmers by year 5 and 6 are offered extra support as an intervention after-school session. 
  • We also track the engagement of our pupils in physical activity so and encourage those children who do not attend after school clubs-both in and out of school- to participate. For example,  this year we have introduced a Curling Club, solely targeted at these vulnerable pupils.                                                                                                                                                                                                             

EYFS   

During the Foundation Stage, children will have the opportunity to develop a range of skills that promote their own physical development.

Lessons concentrate on:

  • the development of manipulative and motor skills
  • experience of spatial awareness, control and co-ordination
  • playing games
  • movement
  • the importance of caring after our bodies
  • sharing, turn taking, choosing and making decisions.

Implementation

Curriculum provision

  • The school provides each class with 2 hours of curriculum PE each week for all KS2 pupils and 1-2 hour for KS1
  • The aim of the curriculum is for it to be broad and balanced allowing the children to develop the key fundamental movement skills in Reception and KS1 leading to applying these skills to specific activities.
  • Both Reception/ KS1 and KS2 are following The Real PE scheme ensuring suitable progression and differentiation
  • KS2 children have the the opportunity to lead in PE 
  • All our teachers deliver P.E lessons throughout the year and a specialist P.E teacher teaches 3 classes every term. 

 

Extra-curricular provision and Community Partners/ Links.

In addition:

  • The school, through their links with the Hastings and Rother School Games Partnership and their SGO, enter a variety of competitions and festivals so broadening the children’s experiences and opportunities.
  • The school organises a variety of “sport experience” days when an external provider runs a series of sessions for the children so broadening their experiences and skills. These links also provide the children with pathway opportunities.
  • At lunch times (through Play leaders), physical activity is promoted. These children choose, plan and organise personal challenges for the children. They promote personal improvement and celebrate the children who improve the most.
  • A wide range of after-school clubs are available throughout the year. These include: Badminton, Netball, Running, Dance  and Karate
