COMPUTING AT GUESTLING
"Computing is not about computers anymore. It's about living."
Nicholas Negroponte (Greek American architect. Founder of the One Laptop per Child Association)
Intent-
At Guestling Bradshaw our computing curriculum has be created to instil and develop the children’s enjoyment and role in using technology. It also helps to support their access and opportunities to create, organise, programme, work with others and manage a vast range of important computing themes and knowledge.
We want our children to be confident, respectful and safe using technology and to inspire our children to be self-assured with ever changing technology in the world.
The scheme of work enables pupils to meet the end of Key Stage Attainment targets outlined in the National curriculum and the aims align with those in the National curriculum.
The National curriculum purpose of study states:‘The core of computing is computer science, in which pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, and how to put this knowledge to use through programming. Building on this knowledge and understanding, pupils are equipped to use information technology to create programs, systems, and a range of content. Computing also ensures that pupils become digitally literate – able to use, and express themselves and develop their ideas through, information and communication technology – at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world’.Therefore, at Guestling Bradshaw, we have taken an approach of using two different resources in tandem. We are using the Kapow Primary scheme of work (EYFS) and the scheme of work from ‘The National Centre for Computing Education’ (KS1 and KS2).
The Kapow scheme is split into three main areas Computer science, Information technology and Digital literacy, with the focus on EYFS’s new framework.
For Year 1 to Year 6, we are using the National Centre for Computing Education scheme which in depth covers all aspects of the curriculum fully.
For both schemes there is a curriculum overview and a progression of skills document. These skills develop year on year to ensure attainment targets are securely met by the end of each key stage.
Implementation
Lessons incorporate a range of teaching strategies from independent tasks, paired and group work as well as unplugged and digital activities. This variety means that lessons are engaging and appeal to those with a variety of learning styles.
Differentiated guidance is available for every lesson to ensure that lessons can be accessed by all pupils and opportunities to stretch pupils’ learning are available when required. Knowledge organisers for each unit support pupils in building a foundation of factual knowledge by encouraging recall of key facts and vocabulary.
Strong subject knowledge is vital for staff to be able to deliver a highly effective and robust computing curriculum. Every unit within the scheme offers guidance and support documents to support all teachers of all confidence levels.
Impact
The impact of both schemes used at Guestling Bradshaw are monitored through both formative and summative assessment opportunities. At the end of Year 6, all children should leave school equipped with a range of skills to enable them to succeed in their secondary education and beyond into the wider world.
Our curriculum will enable pupils to:
- Be critical thinkers and able to understand how to make informed and appropriate digital choices in the future.
- Understand the importance that computing will have going forward in both their educational and working life and in their social and personal futures.
- Understand that technology helps to display their ideas and creativity.
- Show a clear progression of technical skills across all areas of the National curriculum.
- Be able to use technology both individually and as part of a team.
- Be aware of online safety issues and be able to deal with any problems in an appropriate manner.
- Meet the end of key stage expectations outlined in the National curriculum for Computing.
EQUIPMENT
At Guestling we benefit from a wide range of resources, software and online materials that we use to support curricular activities. These include: a purpose built ICT suite, iPads, laptops, Chromebooks, digital cameras and programmable robots.
